Kualapuu was a former Del Monte pineapple plantation camp town. Del Monte closed down its operation at Kualapuu in April of 1988.

Kualapuu is also the site of the Kualapuu Reservoir, the world's largest rubber-lined body of water, which holds 1.4 billion gallons. It is the home for a few families of mallards.
